The 'old' Discoverys' aka the Mk1 are prone to the rear floor pan rotting away. Depending on the state of decay, they can be repaired but in the worst cases, unless you can carry out the work yourself, can be prohibitively expensive to fix.

The Mk2 is a better vehicle and is not prone to the floor pan problems of the Mk1's, but........ apparently they received little or no factory applied waxoyl or similar to the underside. Many (new) owners having sourced a decent, straight, mechanically sound second-hand Disco will have it professionally waxoyled (or similar) treated.

The V8 engine badged as a 4.0L can suffer from water loss through the piston cylinders. Some engines have been modified to accept 'top hat' liners that eliminate this problem.

The Td5 is a solid diesel engine but there have been problems with oil seepage along part of the wiring loom that eventually ruins an ecu? requiring a new component. There is, I believe, an aftermarket mod that you can buy to prevent this from occuring.

Those models with rear air suspension can suffer from leaking air bags and/or intermittent faults with the air compressor but heh!, these vehicles are now between 8 and 14 years old so items do wear.

Common fault is that splines on main gearbox output shaft wear, and when gearbox is rebuilt with new shaft it also needs a new input gear in transfer box which locates on the shaft. When these are wearing you will get a clonk when changing gear. Also lift carpet in boot to see if wet as they are prone to rear end leaks and start rusting internally.

The bit that wears out very quickly on these are the bonnet struts. Effectively they undergo significant structural degradation and mechanical wear.

Thats quite simply because theyre used so often, the number of times you see the bonnet raised out of necessity on these oil dripping, gear box chewing, suspension collapsing rot boxes is amazing.

Avoid at all costs.

My brother has one (an ex channel island 2000 model TD5 auto) It leaks like a sieve through the sunroof and sometimes smells damp inside as a result. And the electrics have a mind of their own (might be linked to the leak?). The leaky sunroof is a known issue so there are cures if you have the inclination. Between us I think we have sorted it. He tows a trailer and maintains that it makes an excellent tow car.

Check landroverforums.com & www.landyzone.co.uk  for warts 'n' all (though possibly biased) advice.

If you want sensible comments on land rover discovery you are better off going on a land rover forum.  You will get lots of dumb comments from people who have never owned one on here.

The older ones may have some problems like most other cars, but most owners will just enjoy owning the best 4x4.

Hopefully not aimed at me, apart form the tongue in cheek bonnet strut comment ALL very directly in my experience and hence my now owning a Jeep.

Your post said Auto, no problem. but if you are tempted to buy a manual, go on a test drive and look out for a clonk each time you change gear (each time you let the clutch out).
if it does the gearbox mainshaft is on its way out.
if its smooth and clonk free you will have a Great towcar
as above look on the Disco owners site.
