Right, I have now narrowed it down to 3 options from a trawl on autotrader. The finalists are X-trail, Mondeo and Volvo V70. The X-trail wins for looks; the Mondeo wins for value for money; and the V70 wins for owners' reviews. Have to double check the stats and have a look in person before making the purchase.

The V70 is the pick of the bunch for me . Make sure the AirCon is working well , they are prone to some high cost problems if you get one that has not been maintained .
Have a look at Honest John for a few tips . Google Honest John if you haven`t been there before .

I strongly suspect the Mondeo would be a lot more economical than the X-trail and a bit better than the Volvo too.

Our mondeo is a 2003 (old I know!) but it's what we had before the van. It's a 2.0 tdci and tows really well. We did about 38-40 mpg on a steady run.

We're thinking about a 4x4 next time but suspect it'll be another (new shape) Mondeo.

I have a 55 Mondeo2.0TDCI. I had to replace the injectors around 2 yrs ago but love the car. Is great solo and tows fantastic. Is cheap for servicing and running costs and very comfy. A friend of mine has a 51 plate 2.5 petrol V70 and he equally loves that. Says its so comfy and good on fuel too.

I'm a Land Rover nut so I would be looking for a rust free Discovery or simillar the max towing ability of most Land Rover products excluding the Freelander is 3.5 ton and you would be able to pull 8 ton albeit illegal, making nose weight much less inportant.

I had a front tyre blow out on my Range Rover with the caravan on the back, it felt like an inconvenience rather than a problem, 2 years ago I had a caravan tyre explode on a motorway, it really made little difference, and could be handled without problem.

A lighter vehicle would have been in trouble in either situation.

Buy a Land Rover some Disco models have 7 seats if you need that ability.

Watch out for rust around the 3K range though.

Id reccomend any passat/audi a4 avant/skoda superb estate with the 1.9 tdi engine in. theyre tough as old boots if you look after them and ive heard of that engine being capable of stellar mileages.

Im currently running an audi a3 2.0tdi which ive got near to 95000 miles on and it drives as well as any new car ive had or driven and hauls like a train!

We've got a Volvo V70 2003 d5. Fab car for towing and really comfortable to travel in.
