We've statrted caravanning in our 1985 4 berth ace pioneer last year and have been well and truly bitten by the bug. The arrival of child number three coupled with an inheritance has meant that we are upgrading to a 5 berth 2001 elddis cyclone - a real beaut. My stabiliser question is this. I used a bulldog stabiliser on the pioneer with no problems, can I do the same with a newer and bigger caravan? I don't fancy paying £100 or so for an "Alko" if the blade will do the trick just as well. Any thoughts on this one? Towcar is a vauxhall frontera and caravan weight is around 1200kg.

I see no reason why not. Ours came with the Alko and it does seem to do a good job. No grease on the tow bar as well. The blade will do the trick.------------- "You can not change the wind, but you can adjust your sails"

We used the blade type for yeeaarrsss
The first one was made by copying a Scott with a car spring from a scrapyard
When funds allow there is more scope but a blade works OK

Yes.....no problem using the blade type at all.
Just because summat new comes out, it don't mean we all have to run out and buy one.

Thanks for your help folks - I like the blade as it is very easy to fit. I've never tried towing without a stabiliser and I don't intend to either!

Would still be using our blade type if we hadn't got an alko at a great price on ebay.
The blade type did us perfectly well for years - my only problem was the fact that I do the towing (most of the time) and couldn't get the blade type to engage - not enough strength - so if I was towing the caravan to collect DH from work on a Friday evening ( se we could set off at 4pm for the weekend) I had to travel these 18 miles without the stabiliser until I could get DH to put it on.
