we are thinking of changing our towcar, at the moment we have a hyundai Santa Fe 2.4 petrol and tow a swift challanger 440e, the santa fe is prfect size wise but we noticed last week that it is lacking power when towing, also the economy isnt the best.
i was wondering what car does everyone else use? i know its easy enough to read the reviews in magazines but nothing beats the experience of actually owning and driving, also we are looking to be getting a bigger van in the future, hence the need to change the car
thanks everyone, i'm looking forward to hearing your advice
I would 100% go for a Diesel Kia Sorento. NOT the new one the pre 2011 one. Fantastic tow car I can't say enough good things about it. Not to mention the remainder of the 7yr warranty.

Had a Sorento from new (2003), changed it last year as mechanics started to fail and were expensive to repair. And it was lacking in power when I upgraded my caravan.
Now got a 10 plate Chrysler 300c estate. 2 tonnes, 3.0 litre V6 merc diesel, £156 to insure and 50 mpg solo. Solid as a rock and plenty of power !
There is a possibility that the new van would be much lighter, if thats the case why choose another 4x4 when it may not be required then you could save some money and get better economy with a diesel car
Toyota Landcruiser 3.0 D-4D Auto. Great tug, comfy ride, good mpg [31 solo - 26 towing van]. This is our second Landcruiser since 2004 and we have towed thousands of miles with never a single problem.
Engage cruise control at 60mph [1800 revs] and just sit back and steer - easier on the French toll roads than on our Motorways.
Has anyone towed with a wagon R 1.3...Not sure whether it will pull our small 1982 Monza. Tows it fine locally but not sure on long mileage. eg Cornwall and Isle of Wight, maybe a bit ambitious....Advice or experience welcome...Thanx Jean.
Freelander 2 now a Disco 3, both have been good towcars.

The road can be tough and rough, but what you put in you get back 10 x more.
Kia Sedona Diesel as well. We purchased this car especially to pull the van, as well as put all of our little un's toys in! We searched the web for info on the budget we had, took the load weight into account, etc. It was a toss up between the Kia and a Nissan (I think), more square looking car.. the Kia won hands down. The insurance for a 2.9, 7 seater which can pull a little heaver than our maximum full weight, was a group 9!
It's 53 plate, purchased Nov 2010 with a low/good mileage.
Sometimes, you forget the van is on the back... only joking.
