Hi everyone, trying to find a new tow car with low 'ish' emissions yet heavy enough to keep within 85% recommendations to tow Bailey Pegasus 524 (1450kg), any ideas??
Skoda superb 1.9 or 1.6 tdi will tow your van, and have low emissions, just check out how much the RFL is on any car the cheaper it is the lower the emissions
I tow a Pegasus 524 with a Mondeo 2.0 TDCi, at the MTPLM of 1480kg it is over 85% of the quoted kerb weight, but another member weighed they Mondeo on a weighbridge & from memory it was about 100kg more than the brochure quoted weight.
As a tow car the Mondeo is fantastic, it is even better since I fitted MAD progressive rear springs to firm up the rear suspension.
I get around 30 mpg towing, or about 27 mpg if I have 3 bikes on the roof of the car.
i tow a 1500 kg coachman with my mondeo, car weighs in at 1700 kg (top spec) pulls the van no probs just come back from cornwall yesterday 350 miles, got 35 mpg going 32 mpg on the return a brilliant all rounder

Which may make the top gear or 2 totally useless.
6th gear on mine is usable but 5th gear actually gives better economy when towing.
Mondeo or Passat? But do double check the towing limits, Some are very low for the size of the car.
My car is eco friendly, but all the gears are very usable when towing, indeed the best economy at 56mph is in 6th gear. It will tow all day in 6th, and the onboard computer indicates to change up when towing at under 50mph.

Cars don't have to be geared to do 150. In fact what's the point of that, even the Germans mostly have more sense than to drive at that speed.
Towed 3000 miles to Italy, mostly in 6th gear, plus another 2000 round the UK last year. This year have towed about 1500 miles so far. I think I know my car by now.
