Where is the manual gearbox oil drain plug on our mk3 mondeo?

I want to do an oil change to the gearbox to see if I can smooth up the gear changes, and people don't trust Fords' 'oil for life' motto.

Done a search on the 'net, but come up with nowt.

Has anyone got the same car, and if possible post a picture please?

They don't usually fit a drain plug now as they did years ago and I think you find that you only have a top up level threaded hole on the side of the gearbox somewhere. If a service garage needs to drain the gearbox oil for any reason they will normally use a long pump with a flexible pipe and suck the oil out. I'm told that because the oil is contained in a separate housing and doesn't actually get contaminated with any engine oil it doesn't ever need changing. Personally I think it's a poor idea as all oil molecules break down over time with wear but I supposed it all down to reducing the cost very much the same as the they don't incorporate grease nipples into cables any more.

On the 'net, they say the plug on one type of 'box is on the side where the nearside driveshaft comes out, then they say on the 'other' type of 'box, it's transverse the other plug. 17

Surely there has to be some way to change the oil?......

5 speed or 6 speed gearbox?

Join talkford.com. Lots of info like that available.

Side of the diff above and to the side on the 6 speed.

1.9 litres for the 5 speed and 1.75 litres for the 6 speed.

Synthetic oils should never deteriorate. The only reason engine oils need regular changing is because carbon gets into them from combustion. This doesn't happen in gear boxes so they should only ever need topping occasionally.

Most Fords don't have drain plugs on their gearboxes. Gearbox oil lasts for the life of the vehicle.

If you do find the drain plug, ensure you can locate & undo filler plug first.

It is on the back of the gearbox quite low down. Looks similar to the filler plug on the front. Get the car on ramps so its tipped back toward the drain plug and you'll get all the oil out nicely. Put the plug back in and roll the car off the ramps and you can fill it to the correct level on the ground.

 Make sure you buy the correct oil from Ford. It's not cheap but its the only stuff that meets the correct spec...  Will be about £25 for 2 litres of the correct stuff.

Did mine about 30k ago and it does make a difference. Mines done 184k now and like you dont believe oil lasts for life......

Another tip, dunno if it helps with a Mondy but to fill very inaccessible VW camper gearbox, one used a long flexible plastic tube from filler hole, over wheel & attached squeezy bottle to that.

Gearbox oil does degrade. The molecules in it get chopped up by the gears meshing.


It does have a drain plug. At the rear of the engine is a roll mount, Tucked away behind the bracket is the drain plug. There is enough room for a ratchet though.

The fill plug is on the front of the gearbox.

Drain plug was on side, facing engine oil drain plug, and the fill plug was actually a bolt come sensor on the top of the 'box, easy access too when you remove the air filter box, straight down underneath it. 17

That doesn't sound right.....

filler plug is on the front of the gearbox and is an allen key headed bolt. its not on top and there's no need to remove the air filter box or anything else........

Sounds like the sensor/bolt could be the reverse switch? If it worked ok, then result!

Errr except they no longer know how much oil is in the gearbox.

Too much is as bad as too little.

The filler plug is on the front face of the box.

If it starts to whine there isnt enough oil and the gears are running dry. If you start to get leaks its overfilled and forcing past the oil seals.

2 expensive repairs.
