Hi, i have been looking at Nissan x-trail for my next tow car. Can anyone give any info on them good or bad, what i need to look for, mileage, spec, etc. Im not a car junky but would like to know what im looking at thanks.

we have an 05 model great for towing only prob a blown turbo and intercooler this can be one of the probs with the xtrail but other than that great two car, been to france twice came back from la rochell towing 20 hours none stop, apart from changing drivers car never missed a beat. ours has now done 90k had it for three
years cant say what it had towed before but still has plenty of grunt to pull our alpine sprite. also great when it snows the four wheel drive works well, not the same hill climbs as a landy but for campsites and on the road towing no probs

Great tow car. We bought ours, an ex demo, at Christmas time and we love it.
The mk2 from 2007 is slightly bigger than the mk1 and has more power. I understand the early mk1 2.2 diesel cars are prone to turbo issues if not cared for. Not sure about the petrols.
Ours is a 2011 model 173ps 2.0dci - pulls like a train, and is really well equipped. If your thinking of new it's worth joining the caravan club as members get 15% off of new X Trails currently.

Thank you for your replies but after reading some horror stories about the turbo blowing and the cost of a replacement not sure i should go down that route. thanks anyway.

Depends whether you get an early 2.2 or the later 2.0 in the mk2, not aware if any turbo issues with the mk2? The mk2 was launched in '07.
Running a 2005 T31 SVE Diesel towing 2003 Elddis 524. In theory caravan is slightly heavy for the car but loading the car with the heavy stuff sorts the stability and it rides level, especially with a wheel in each corner. From a "grunt" point of view, it's superb, Bear in mind it has the same power as Land Rover Discovery 2 TD5 with 75% of the weight. Get 28-30mpg towing, 35/38 mpg solo. Tends to be a bit noisy on start up (sounds liek a taxi but fine once warmed up. Not a go anywhere vehicle like the Disco but it's 4 wheel drive system is excellent (towed in scotland over Christmas and New Year with no issues). Very happy with mine. The often quoted "tows like a train" definitely applies to this car! I am a retired motor engineer and chose the x-trail as a good compromise: My heart said "Discovery" but my head said "X-Trail" and I have no regrets
T30 SVE: Leather heated and powered seats, aircon, radio controls on steering wheel, electric windows, remote central locking, electric heated and folding mirrors, spot lights, electric sunroof, 6CD Autochanger or Satnav, drinks cooler/warmer cubby holes. Alloy wheels.
2006 SVE replaced by Aventura, addition of cruise control.
Both models, check history regards replacement of turbo charger and intercooler if over 100,000 miles. Generally not a DIY fix without diagnostic kit (electronic everything)
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
