Will a Honda Civic 1.6 hatchback be able to tow a touring caravan or is this too heavy for this type of car?

towcar says 1200kg max or 716jg for 85% with the 2004 model. Doesn't seem like much?

There are so many factors to consider when matching an outfit, the 1200kg max tow limit that you quote for the 2004 1.6 Civic is the Maximum weight the car would pull on a standard gradient in 1st gear, it is in no way an indication of how good it would be if used for any period of time as a general towcar, and the 1200kg is the maximum weight that the car can legally tow.

We tow with this cars big brother, the 1.8 petrol Civic, 2009, and manage fine towing a lightly loaded 950kg Lunar. I also once towed an Avondale 13ft 750kg Adonis with a 1994 1.5 Civic, fine on the flat, but we could become stranded in high headwinds or if unexpectantly diverted onto a more hilly route than originally planned, and its no joke crawling on a motorway at 30mph.

There are some lightweight caravans out there if you choose carefully, are you looking to buy new or secondhand? How many berths are you needing?

If you can answer these questions then it would make it so much easier to point you in the right direction of which models of caravan may be suitable for your needs.

Probably a 2 berth. I don't know much about them yet but a double bed, cooking area, sitting area, maybe an awning or something.

remember not to tow a caravan that weighs more than your car as you may encounter stability problems

max tow weight is 1,200kg trailer with brakes
500kg trailer without.

85% of 500 = 425kg caravan

Hi there

what you need to find out is what the kerb weight of your car is.

My mondeo's kerb weight is around 1500kg but the v5 document states max towing weight of a braked trailer is 1800kg the car could probably pull this but going down hill the trailer would be heavier than the car and would be effectively pushing the car and you'd probably wear the brakes out.

A caravan will be a braked trailer

once you know the kerb weight the ideal towing scenario is 85% of this but you can go up to 100% if an experienced tower

Kerb weight is 1,200kg, but the manual definitely distinguishes between trailer with brakes and trailer without brakes.
1,200kg with
500kg without
then 85% of those weights.

even a cheapo caravan will be a braked trailer?

So your cars kerbweight is 1200kg
and your max towing weight is 1200kg .
to keep within the 85% advisory towing match any caravan should weigh around 1020kg when fully loaded .
IMO anything heavier and you car will really struggle
