I have a caravan with a normal hitch without any sort of built in stabiliser. The tow ball is new and painted.

When towing it really creaks, I have read about removing the paint for a stabiliser hitch but do I need to do this for mine or should I be greasing the ball?

Remove the paint and grease the ball.

There will be a lot of friction and wear if you dont grease it.

Theres no need to bother to clean paint off the ball for standard hitch. Easiest is to use a can of spray lithium grease. Spray it on the ball & also give hitch a good coating on the moving parts as well & repeat on a regular basis.

I wouldnt leave the paint on. Over time it will wear or break away and possibly clog the hitch.

I think its best to remove the paint.
