Mitsubishi Outlander here. Towed with it for 2 years now and have been really impressed.
Previously towed with a BMW 320d which had much more power on paper but in reality the Outlander has more oomph. Also really useful to be able to lock the diff in 4wd mode for getting off/on wet or muddy pitches. Great handing and economy is close to most cars.
I'm not quite yet in the market for a new tug, but I like to spend months researching the options... Current van is well under the 1,500Kg discussed in this thread, (1271Kg), but the current car couldn't cope with a heavier van. Would really like a car that could cope with a 1500Kg van, so we can increase the choice of van when we come to swap, so this thread has been a really interesting read for me.
I've only been considering 4x4's, although I'm not sure why?
We don't really go to sites that would entail driving across a muddy field, we can walk to work when it's snowing, and they certainly seem to be both more expensive to buy, run (as in tax, not sure about insurance), and fill up at the pumps than a 2wd that would cope with a 1500kg van.
But for some reason I always seem drawn back to gazing fondly at the 4x4 options, whether it be a Honda CRV, Freelander 2, Nissan X-Trail, or dreamily a new Kia or Volvo XC60.
Mondeo is at about 95%, to high for some my van is quite stable with an extended a frame I also factor the weight of the family and all the stuff in the boot which would lower that figure
TDi Galaxy here, towing our Swift Challenger. Does a great job. Towed with a TDCi Mondeo before, & I preferred it. Match was high, theoretically it was 95%; but actual less as we basically towed an empty van & had everything bar essentials in the car. Was a lovely tow car.
I would back the Mondeo. Tows my 1450kg van rock steady. Better tow than a lot of 4x4s due to the lower centre of gravity. Don't let the slightly lower weight mislead you.
Dont know if you have considered an Audi Q7?
I am on my second one and use it to tow my twin axle crusader, Ican honestly say its the best towcar i have owned in 25 years of towing. It pulls like a train and commands the crusader at all times. I have taken it toFrance and Italy many times in all types of road terrain and conditions and nothing phases it at all.
The CRV has excellent build qality and reliability, even though my caravan is just under 1300kg max, im seriously considering upgrading to a fairly new CRV for next season.
My one and only, never to be repeated experiance of Kia ownership was the stuff of nightmares, even if they do give you a long warantee its bloomin annoying keep breaking down and having to spend a lot of time having to make do with one of their service centre curtosy cars which is often not suitable being far too small to take my mobility scooter.

Ford galaxy or ford ranger thunder 4 door cab.....a commercial vehicle but they seem to let them on most sites!
I'm looking into changing our tow sometime this year (hopefully) to a 'pickup' of some kind, due to a change in jobs.
One thing I can't find out is, the road tax. What is it for pickups / commercial vehicles?
