Next week we are towing our caravan to the Vendee.  We are getting to Calais for approx 11am.  We have done the drive before but in a small campervan and had a terrible experience as we went through Paris and spent approx £160 return on Tolls.  Please could someone tell me the cheapest and quickest route from Calais to Vendee?  Thanks

I'd avoid Paris like the plague...!!

Head for Rouen, then down the 'coast' towards Le Mans (A28). This is going all Autoroute, so there will be tolls to pay - but can't see it being £160 return....it doesn't cost us that much towing a caravan down there!

Use viaMichelin to plan the route, and it will give you an idea of the tolls etc so long as you put your vehicle details in.

It's a good run down there, and fairly straightforward...good luck

Did the same route last year as suggested , incorporating a stopover in sees, and the tolls were about 50 euros each way.( but well worth it)

Depends where in the Vendee?

Cheaper toll route would be down towards Rouen and the the A29 north round Rouen towards Caen and down toward Rennes and Nantes (via michein as above useful tool to tell you the tolls but this will be much cheaper than the A28 route via Le Mans/Angers etc

Depending on how far you want to drive in one day maybe a stop off somewhere between Caen and Rennes

Paris?! How did you get there on the way to the Vendee?! It's miles out of the way - an A4 map of the whole of France could have shown you that

Maps are nice but I would suggest you need a sat-nav, pronto .

Try the viaMichelin website - also gives you a rough idea of toll costs for your route.

As above posts - viaMichelin was invaluable for us on our journey to St John-de-Monts (if I spelt it right). Gave us the cheapest route avoiding tolls as much as possible. Remember to keep to the speed limit as French speed traps seem to be frequent on the non-toll roads. Also, using slower roads while towing your van makes little difference on real journey times as the speed limit is much lower when towing, eg, we travelled to Paris earlier this year on the toll road with a speed limit of 130kmh, but our limit towing was only 90kmh. So we paid for fast road and travelled slow - DOH!!
