I have a 2002 diesel xtrail sport 2.2di.
I thought I'd investigate a general lack of power and occasional power surging with 3 times going into limp mode. I had to replace the MAF (mas air flow meter) two years ago (this was a genuine part) so I know it was not that causing the problem. First up was the exhaust gas recirculating valve ERG. Not cheap at £530 (genuine part)but as my xtrail is a 2002 I thought I may as well put a bit of money into it. What I found when I removed the old one was the tube that goes into the inlet manifold was quite restricted with gunge( which is a normal issue with egr's. Performance is better but mpg still not what it was when I bought the car. So I have now replaced the suction control valves on the deisel pump there is two one red and one green. These cost £186 from a company on eBay in Kent these scv's are OE spec and actually came in nissan packaging although not mentioned in the part description.
Performance is now better than when I bought the car and mpg is back to 42mpg.
Yes quite agree. But you need to reprogram the ecu as it expects to see a change between egr position and air flow meter. This when the egr is fully shut more fresh air will be burnt, when half shut air flow to engine speed will be reduced, the ecu can either go to limp mode as the air to engine speed is not correct or help blow the turbo. I will add the diesel pump was not delivering enough fuel due the faulty suction control valves. I had tried blanking the egr but made not a lot of difference apart from causing the management light to come on.
