I currently own a ssangyong musso 2.9 td.Nice car but does slow down and seems to struggle up hills.Although i get good mpg i dont think an engine of this size should struggle.Im thinking of changing my tow car for a newer one as my car is an x reg year 2000.I have been looking at 4x4 cars but i really need ideas. My caravan is a lunar freelander based on the 640,a special edition made for chichester caravans. Its a twin axel and inc A frame is 28ft long and weighing 1246 kg unladen. So what diesel car will pull this well even over the moors to whitby. My limit is £8000 for a vehicle. But it would be nice to accelerate up hill easily.

You need to know the MTPLM of the caravan to calculate a good match.
It looks like the Musso is quite a low powered unit at 120bhp so perhaps something like a Galaxy with 140 or 160 bhp would be better, depending on the caravan weight, but I have no idea how it would perform with a twin axle van. I'm sure somebody else will come along soon with more relevant experience.

I had a Musso it produced 105 bhp While it was ok dragging itself around it wasn't so good towing
The Lunar will weigh around 1600-1800 kls depending on year fully laden So really a full size 4x4 is required
Have you looked at a jeep?
The 3.0 diesel merc version is around 215 hp and a decent one can be had for around 8 grand However be prepared for 20 mpg..

well, after looking around i have narrowed it down, the audi Q7 is too expensive,i like the volvo xc90 and the 3.0 jeep cherokee. The volvo is 185 bhp and the jeep is 215 bhp.I suppose they will both do the job,now is manual or auto best and if i get auto will i need an extra oil cooler fitted. Not many manual jeeps about

Old model Sorentos pull like a train. 06 version onwards is better as it has a 168bhp engine and more grunt! Reliable too. £8K should get a good one.
We had an 06 then a 59 (manual)which would do 22-24 mpg towing a Bailey Pegasus.
Autos are thirstier and higher tax band.

I have never seen a 3.0 ltr manual jeep
Go for the later Quadra drive 2 gearbox if you can Mine has been fine towing with no need for an extra oil cooler

So an extra 30 to 40% bhp is something to be sniffed at, I believe its the merc engine under the bonnet so should chip no problem

The 3.0 CRD Jeep Grand Cherokee is only available with an auto gearbox.
I sold my 07 plate GC for £7K with 90,000 on the clock so you should be able to get a decent one for your budget.
Only advise is to make sure it has a full service history as all the oils need changing regularly.
