I know it sounds like a crazy question, but bear with me here, as I usually put the bike in my van, but with the amount of equipment I will be carrying, I can't do this now.
My caravan has a bike rack on the back, I just wondered what people do to attach their bike to a rack, either on the back of their caravan or car or camper? I ask this as someone who was a passenger in a car on a motorway, when a bike on the car in front fell off, in the fast lane, smashing into bits right in front of us! As I'm sure you understand, I'm now very wary of making sure my bike won't come off my rack, especially as it's a 1952 Humber Sports bike and I love it! Thanks
Is this a Fiamma rack as seen on most motorhomes? These usually have a channel that the wheels sit in and straps to secure them, then they have a clamp which fixes the top tube to the rack. I would probably use a ratchet strap as well but I do tend to overdo things.
If it is a Fiamma or Omnistor rack it should have straps to hold wheels in channels & tubular clamps on top rail to hold bikes firmly around crossbars. It sounds like these might be missing. If so you can order them from any caravan shop or they might have them in stock. The bikes will not fall off these types of rack, it is the cheap strap on type rack with bike lashed on with bungees that are most likely to fall off on the road.
I actually don't know the make of the rack! But it has two fold down channels that the wheels sit in, and there's a couple of horizontal bars to help support the bike. Similar to this but this one doesn't have the horizontal bars like mine: http://www.worldofcamping.co.uk/fiamma-carry-bike-pro-140941-236?gclid=CPfs28Hbob0CFZDKtAod3XoAwA#fo_c=273&fo_k=ab01c140f3c0d3610c74e0481948acbf&fo_s=gplauk
There aren't any straps attached unfortunately, I was thinking bungees or ratchet strap as well as a couple of bike locks (I overdo it too lol)
Here's the bike, unfortunately the only photos available are as it was the day I bought it for £14!!! (reckon it'd be worth a bit more now, I got it 8 years ago when they weren't fashionable) I just put new tyres, inner tubes and brakes on and off it went! Gears etc all worked immediately despite having been stored for years:
Thanks for the replies guys, just searched ebay after your suggestions, and seen the straps it should have, so I'll order some of those. You're real stars!
Glad you've got that sorted, a couple of short straps on the wheels and the top clamp sorted and it'll be very secure.
What a great bike. I notice it has caliper brakes rather than stirrups so it must have been a top of the range bike in its day. If you are interested in old bikes have a look at the classic lightweights website for a quick dose of nostalgia.
