Hi we are looking to replace our citroen picasso 2.0 hdi and looking for suitable replacement our caravan has a mptlm of 1166kg,I am looking for something with a bit more grunt but also has to be fairly economical as a daily driver with a commute of 40 miles daily, budget is a problem we only have about £3000 plus our car which is worth about £500 thinking of maybe an auto as I think it will make a better tow car?any suggestions or recommendations.
Bit of a tall order really because you will be looking a med sized diesel car a few yrs old so it will be the usual Mondeo, Skoda etc, any one of which could go expensively wrong with failed turbos & clutches etc so only advice would be to try & find one with a service history.
Trouble with any modern car is not usually basic engine/gearbox which should be good for 200k miles but all the other bits that can go wrong to make an older car not viable to repair. Not really worth getting an auto imho, older ones are poor economy & early dsg autos can be troublesome.
Why do you want more 'grunt'? Presumably caravan towing is only a small part of your annual mileage? As long as it can tow caravan why worry about power if you want economy on your commute? Whats wrong with your Citroen? That 2litre diesel is excellent engine & will run for 200k miles, if its running ok I'd hang onto until it ain't worth fixing.
One of the last MK3 Mondeo's 2L 130bhp diesel or the 2.2 155bhp diesel.
Clutches with a dual mass flywheel are an issue with lots of modern cars. Either buy a car thats just had one done or budget £600 - £800 for a full clutch and DMF change.
MK4 Mondeo's will have lots of miles for that money.
The issue with mosyt auto's are that people never get the oil changed. When it goes to the crusher it will have the same oil it left the factory with.
Oil changes help them live longer.
