Hi im looking at a 525d se tourer, has anybody pulled a 1550kg caravan with a bmw 525.Any comments or posts would be welcome thank you.I have 2 children and a lovely wife so the car would be packed to the hilt to add to the weight of the car so looking for advive please!!!!!!! thank you
You shouldn`t have a problem, I tow with a 520D (F11), and had a 520D (E61) before.
You don`t say which model yours is, but we tow 1375 kgs with the boot well full (seats down, full awning, second fridge, sat system, awning table & chairs in the car and two bikes on the roof) and it really plays with it all.
Easy towing in 6th, totally stable (self-levelling rear suspension) and very economical.
You don`t say which model yours is, but it has all the right ingredients to more than cope.
Hi and thanks for your response, was looking at a 07/08 model.I really like the look of the m tech models as well so im in the middle really, would the rear end of both cars cope with a heavy caravan on the back ie back end sitting down low????,also if your car pulled that weight well do you think a 520d would pull 1550kg with no problem as the tax and mpg is good on the 520.
Well, I have (and had) the M-Sport models, and as long as the noseweight is within the manufacturers limit (100kg if memory serves) the self-levelling suspension makes sure the rear end sits at the same height with the boot full and `van on as it does when its empty.
The pre-2007 525D has the same power as the post=2007 520D, but a little more torque (and uses about 20% more fuel), so you pays your money and takes your choice. Personally I would go for a later 520 (my towing mileage is less than 10% of my annual mileage), but there are a lot of people that think that you don`t have a BMW unless it has six cylinders. You are getting close to a 100% towing ratio with either model, but bear in mind there will be probably 30 520D`s for every 525D for sale, so you will have a much wider choice.
I would tow that weight happily, anywhere. But then again there is never any substitute for power/torque, so it would also make sense for someone to go for the biggest, most capable engine they could afford.
