Towing Report
Ford and Sterling
The towing capability for the Ford Kuga II - 2.0 TDCi [FWD]
with a Sterling Eccles Amethyst:
89%
1436 kg 1605 kg
80 kg
Ford Kuga II - 2.0 TDCi [FWD] (103 kW/138 bhp)
Date of manufacture: january 2013 - up to now. Towball limit: 85 kg (Advise: 80 kg)
Important for safe towing is the weight ratio between Car and Caravan. The weight ratio (loaded caravan / kerbweight tow car) for the Ford and Sterling is 89%. This means that the caravan is a somewhat heavy for this car. The stability and safety index is satisfactory for this outfit.
The towing performances of this Ford with your Sterling are perfect (performance index = 63).
You may expect excellent performances from this outfit. On flat roads it's easy to come along, top gear is applicable in most cases.
On motorway inclines you will be able to come along quite nicely. On steep roads you have more than sufficient power to keep going. On hill starts there will be more than enough power to get going, provided the wheels have traction.
Check data
Car make and model Ford Kuga II - 2.0 TDCi [FWD]
Year of issue january 2013 - up to now
Power 138 bhp (103 kW) at 3750 rpm
Torque 236 lb/ft (320 Nm) at (or from) 1750 rpm
Kerbweight (may differ in the UK) 1605 kg and 'ballasted' with 150 kg
Tyres 235 / 55 R 17
Transmission Manual (or automatic without torque converter)
6 speed
Caravan Sterling Eccles Amethyst
Actual laden caravan weight 1436 kg (car towing limit is 1800 kg)
The airflow is: average (height = 2.59 m and width = 2.23 m)
Most modern diesels will tow your house up your average hill.
SO power and torque is not really an issue.
One thing to check is the gross train weight. With my Mondeo the max laden car weight and max tow weight exceed the gross train weight.
So i can tow a heavier caravan if i dont load the car to its limit.
Gross car weigh 2100kg. Max tow 1800kg. But gross weight is 3720kg. So i would beed to lose 180kg somewhere.

Rickster -- shame on you !
If you work for Land Rover , how can you even contemplate towing with anything else ???

I know, the freelander I had although old did a decent job, just needed more power, as I said above we were selling the van, but no interest despite reducing the price, I will not reduce it anymore as I wanted a certain price, so now looking at something to tow it, reason a Kuga is the privilege discount I get for working at land rover, wouldn't have budget to get a newer land rover, otherwise I would.
