Well, Bank Holiday Monday we went away in our van, up the hills and down the dales (literally) in Derbyshire.
All was going fine, we were pleased with the performance of our car - VW Golf estate - as with care and forward thinking it coped admirable with everything it met, and maintained a safe speed of 50 mph on single carriageways.
Nearly there - and imagine our surprise when we were overtaken going down a steep twisting hill by a car towing a caravan!
We were so shocked, every basic bit of commonsense tells you that the rather large white box on the back of your car will push you down those hills!
Average Renault car, 2 adults, 2 teenagers, pup tent, average 4 berth caravan.
I know that because when we arrived at Chatsworth at 1pm they were in the line in front of us.
Well that was worth the risk then wasn't it??????????????
All I can say is they wouldn't have been so lucky if you were driving a high sided lorry as their caravan would most probably started to snake going down hill. However, the caravan could have ATC fitted which then the driver becomes complacent leading to an ignorant attitude of pure selfishness.
The ATC was designed specifically for safer towing but it doesn't bear thinking about when advanced technology is put into the wrong hands. It may well make be safer for the majority of caravanners but could also be a complete nightmare for some if you get inconsiderate idiots like this on the road.
It's unbelievable that people would take a chance and risk their lives overtaking in such a dangerous place.
