We have been blinded by approachoing vans as well as when following. When the sun is high in the sky the angle bounces straight back so you don't have to be that close.
I think the older, non concertina ones are worse at blinding.

I think the spring thing is immaterial when towing really, they are usually closed for longer periods at night. However I believe the 'little picture ' that Paul B refers to is more to do with bright sunshine reflecting heat from the silver side of the blind and causing the window plastic to get very hot on one side. When parked up and blinds down the windows should be left on the latch to allow cooling air to flow. Granted you would need to drive in one direction for quite a while.
