Since having our caravan a Lunar Clubman Se we have had problems with the ATC.
Locking on after going over a speed bump on a campsite (very slowly I may add), red light flashing and having to constantly reset it, a bit unnerving when abroad. Our dealer said it was ok when tested, despite the constant flas hing red light in the middle of journeys.
Recently it would not reset, so our local caravan repairers removed it so we could go on holiday, the caravan towed faultlessly and our fuel consumption averaged 25 mpg instead of the usual 22mpg with the ATC active!
We returned from holiday and the ATC was refitted and reset to factory settings. However after approx 120 miles of towing on our next weekend away I turned left at a T junction and the brakes locked on, resulting in smoking brakes and very hot brake drums by the time I found a safe place to stop.
Despite unplugging and re plugging the caravan electrics the ATC would not reset, and I had to employ a local garage to remove the ATC so as to be able to carry on. The unit is now at our local caravan repairers awaiting instructions from Alko as to how we can have it checked out and reset or repaired. I have also purchased a 17mm and 19mm scanners to keep in the car so I can remove the ATC next time it goes wrong, that's how confident I am of it. I am also thinking of informing my insurance company that ATC is fitted sometimes, I wonder what the premium discount will be.
The caravan is now 4 years old, so is the ATC approaching the end of its useful life.
Has any one else had problems relating to age on the ATC.
As well as having the ATC looked at I would be getting the car's electrical wiring to the socket, the supply and earth and both the socket and plug tested and checked. Plus checking for the use of heavy enough duty cable.
Any break in continuity or droop in voltage can cause issues. Is the cabling long enough that the plug can't be "pulled" a bit on turning?
The flashing red light indicates the ATC has applied the brakes and the van can't be towed.
Going squarely over a speed bump will not provoke the ATC, though going over obliquely is likely to.
Best of luck in getting the fault be it with the ATC, car or connection, sorted.
I will be getting the wiring checked, I've just been waiting for the caravan repairers to get the removed unit analysed, as they say that it is possible to connect to a computer and it will list the faults. The speed bump in question was taken square on, and at very very slow speed because it was one of those 3-4 inch wide ones that make you teeth rattle. Yes the cable has plenty of "scope" and does not pull the plug.
Thanks for your reply.

Our Luanr Lexon is over 4 years of age and the ATC has been no problem , towed with my old 2009 CRV and my present 2014 with no issues both cars have 13 pin socket with additional Honda Plug in wiring loom which guarantees a good voltage to the ATC unit
Had the car tested now, all ok, so it's down to the ATC, apparently it can be adjusted so it is to tight when brakes are applied so will not go through the reset cycle because the push rod can not travel to its extreme, who knows, hurry up Alko and return my caravan repairers call.
