It will prove correct mileage but not who actually clocked it unless it can be proved trader bought car with high milage & sold it with lower mileage.

I was hoping that this post was a spoof, especially when someone asked you where did you buy it and the answer was [I bought it from a man who] "had shed on a disused fuel station".
Surely that in itself would have sent bells ringing. What possessed you to even look at it in the first place?

He was also running a car wash business and had a few other cars for sale, wasn"t a shed but a portakabin, member on ebay for 4 years with good feedback,i checked everything i could-vin numbers matched, did a vin number check online,no undue wear on steering wheel or pedals,he had a printed hpi check, service booked tied up with mileage on car,i just wish i had known about the mot history check that is available online, the car looked good and drove really well,i had no reason to be suspicious
I once bought a car off a little local dealer and although I knew it was a repaired accident car I didn't know it had been a write off until I came to part exchange it and discovered it was pretty much worthless.
On another occasion I was having my car regularly serviced by another 'trustworthy' local repair shop only to discover after two or three years that he was not doing all the work he was charging me for, and was little cheaper than a main dealer. I refused to pay for the final service and he didn't argue.
On a third occasion I had some work done to brakes by yet another local man working from a 'shed' behind my local petrol station and on not one, but two occasions he returned my car to me with seriously defective brakes. The first time I nearly ran into the back of another car! The second time I was thankfully more cautious and discovered the fault as soon as I left the garage. He was quite nasty when I confronted him with it.
So not all local little garages are competent and rely on customer satisfaction but still seem to survive. I now use large garages, not always a main dealer. It may cost a little more but that is not always the case, and even a big dealer doesn't want bad press.
Check out the Honest John website for good indie garages in your area.
There are also specialist Volvo garages apart from main dealers, and a Google search should throw one up.
While I expect you are a bit annoyed at the rip-off, you do say your car looks and drives very well, so all is not lost. I would bet a crisp tenner that you'll never be caught like that again. It could have been much worse, perhaps a dangerous ex-write-off or even a previously stolen car in which case you would have had it confiscated with no compensation.

Suppose thats true hairywol, having cambelt and service done on friday,£200 less than main dealer,at a reputable local garage,i only do about 6000 mls a year and need to keep the car for 2 years so that will put it on 215,000 miles just hope it lasts ok,very peeved that its cost me over £5000 for a car thats probably worth £3000 tops, and your right i definitely wont be caught again!
Not sure why no body has mentioned HPI or Experian yet.
My daughter was recently looking for a car and we spotted a very nice low mileage Corsa at a local dealership that specialised (their words) in low mileage vehicles all of which are HPI checked.
Placed deposit and arranged collection in a few days.
Just to be safe I did my own check on HPI and low and behold there was a major discrepancy in the mileage .
Hot footed it back to the dealer who, immediately refunded our deposit no questions asked. It turns out they relied on the main dealer saying they had HPI'd the car before they sold it on to them, may be true but either way never trust what anybody selling you a car tells you, always check and double check as per the OP.
I recently bought a low mile 07 vectra which is verified but I did notice when looking around at low milers that many of them look a lot more used than the mileage suggests. Giveaway signs are shiney steering wheels/gearstick, worn accelerator pedal and door handles etc.
hi, if you get the document number from the front of the v5 you can then do a check through
https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-status
I always do this when buying a second hand car.
This only records the history since the mot systems were computerised a few years back so with an older car it wont show the full mot history and the mileages recorded on the mot.
Another con is dealers who list a car as having a full service history, a couple of times I have looked at cars advertised as having a full history but when I asked if I can see the history, they cant find it.
Even independents try to pull a fast one, I bought a 4 year old car from strastone in wakefield, mercedes main dealer I was told that the car had got a spare key ( these are £300 from vw).
I am still waiting for the key 6 years later.
Sorry to hear that you got conned.
Its a shame the government dont list if a car has been recorded as a write off also.
i feel for you with a clocked car it must be awful luckily never had it done myself but thanks for the tip i will watch out now.
jeepster i notice you are on about FSH. my problem is i do servicing myself i buy oil air fuel and pollen filter every time along with oil. i even strip the brakes (which the indi's or dealers don't do) clean them make them free to work better and give my car a complete once over. my issue is my book is never stamped or proof of a service but i know my cars are. if i sell my car on i have no proof of a FSH.
