I need a route from Surrey to Okehampton (towing) and was wondering what the M3 and A303 was like? I'd normally take the M4 - M5 route when travelling from the North and could still use that from Surrey but the M3 - A303 looks better. The only thing that bothers me is whether there's anything nasty I may have missed.

M3/A303 is the obvious shorter way to go. There are some sections of A303 where you have no dual carriageway but still the best route in my opinion.

M3-A303 is ok, its probably about 20miles shorter but not all of it is dual carriageway so its more work, slowing for roundabouts etc, but its a major trunk route which many find more relaxing due to a bigger variety of stopping places than M4-M5 route.

The 303 is ok so long as you use it when no one else is using it...

I've towed on both, the M4/M5 is the better route without a doubt

M4 M5 is equally susceptible to holdups in my view. It's longer. Can be very slow and is boring. Please use it to leave the A303 clear for me.

Very often each to our own route Steve
I remember once trying the 303 rather than the A31/A35 route - all went well until I got to a closed bit of the 303 and ended up in the back of nowhere for ages
