Still trying to get my head around the b+e rules, can my son drive this outfit jeep patriot 2.0 crd limited 2007 and 2001 abbey expression 520l 4 berth without taking his b+e test, he passed his test after 97 ?

i have not got the van at home a quick google search says the van has a maximum weight of 1280kg and the jeep Gross vehicle weight 2010 kg.that is under the 3500kg limit is that correct or am i missing something?

I think you have the wrong weights for the car, a Ford Focus is heavier than that.

Well that's a surprise, I've just got out my Focus brochure and it confirms a 2.0 diesel has a GVW of 2050kg, I'd always thought a 4x4 would have been quite a bit heavier.

So if the MTPLM of the caravan and GVW addup to less than 3500kg everything is ok for him to drive and at 3290kg he is well under the limit.

thats what i thought, it was the up to 3.5 tonnes MAM providing the MAM of the trailer doesn't exceed the unladen mass of the towing vehicle that i was worried about but at 1515kg he is still under the limit so it looks like he is ok

That is irrelevant these days, the restriction on the caravan weighing less than the cars unladen weight was removed in 2013.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

Thats ok then, just got a reply off michael jordon caravans that said the abbey expression 520 is 1315kg MAM so he is 175kg under the limit

SO everything is ok, but is he insured to drive your vehicle and same to tow your van check your van insurance.
My insurance asked me would I be the only one towing the van as well as my cars no claims which is about 27 years. which brought down my van insurance by about £90
