After some advice off the lovely people on here we are soon off on our first caravan trip. I've spent hours on google maps with street view (yep really I have) so am a little more confident that we don't have any mini side streets to go down however my biggest worry is the huge blind spot that is the back of the van. We have a Bailey Pursuit 540/5 which feels so big to me and when turning corners I just feel like the back end is going to hit the opposite wall/parked car/person etc. Any advice for turning corners? I know I need to go wider and slower but the back end swinging out worries me.
If the road is very narrow or you are coming out of a narrow entrance get your passenger to get out of car and direct you, he will need to stand where he can see both you and end of caravan. Even if you are holding traffic up its better than a damaged caravan.
Otherwise just ensure you turn as wide as poss using all the road. For example if you think its tight wait for traffic to clear in both directions so you can pull out right across road, that sort of stuff. Don't be afraid to go slow, those behind can wait.
The place to be most cautious is exiting a campsite entrance if it's a bit on the narrow side which if it is then you have to weigh up the situation. If you are going to turn right then you are best to be slightly off set to the right from the centre to allow for the caravan swing on the rear left and visa versa if you are turning left. However, turning left will create a tighter swing than a making a right turn but this will all come with confidence and experience.
Hi once you have your towing mirrors on, the existing car mirrors can be adjusted down to see the caravan wheels then you can see where they are in relation to kerbs etc.
