Hi all.
we have just purchased our first caravan after 35 years of camping and two years with a campervan.it is an elddis mistral gt.we will be towing it with an audi a4 1.8se petrol.the caravan weighs 1100kg.
we towed it from the dealers place and all seems great (hav'nt tried reversing yet)
would anybody have any concerns with the weight issue for the car? any advice would be greatly appreciated.Paul & Jen
Just check the kerbside weight of your car. You will find this in the handbook or online. A good guide is to aim for the max weight of the caravan to be around 85% of the kerb weight of the car. (This is not a law just a guideline)
Also you can use www.whattowcar.com
If weight ratios are OK I think a 1.8petrol should cope OK.
Thanks for the swift reply. Kerb weight is 1220kg max towing says 1350-1600kg so im thinking that our 1100kg van is a nice weight.thanks again paul & jen.
Hi
Your towing at 90% is the 1100kg the maximum laden weight of the caravan. If it is I would say everything should be fine provided the car has enough power to cope.
Also check the noseweight limits of the car and towbar. Load the caravan carefully with heavy items over the axel.
There will be more folk along shortly who will be able to offer addition information.
Mass in running order is 860kg MTPLM is 1100kg so does that mean that the bare weight of the van without any xtras is 850kg very new to us and don't want to make any silly mistakes.paul
Yes that is the bare weight of the caravan. Which leaves you with 250kg for gas bottle (not sure if the battery is included in that weight)
and all your other stuff.
Thanks very much.thats a great help.only have gas bottle and a few bits and pieces all lightweight due to camping.250kg is ample to play with.many thanks paul & jen
