Bessie
Hi Bessie
Good post, but when we have to find a true carrying weight of a lorry, or van we have to go to a weigh bridge and have the motor with a full tank and either 2 or 3 people in the cab. (depends on seats)
This then gives you the payload of the said motor. Thats VOSA guidelines.
So to get the exect payload of a car you would need 5 adults, full tank of fuel and weigh at that. that would then give you a payload figure for said motor.
Bit over the top but if you get pulled by VOSA with 5 people and load, plus van, thats what they will weigh not one person and tank of fuel.
Which model though? What spec? Any extras? Inc towbar etc?
Would be interesting to see how much the kerbweight varies over several cars.
The letter in the caravan mag where an owner wrote in to vent his disgust when he weighed his new caravan and found it weighed a lot more than he the figures suggested and only allowed 40 or 60kg instead of 200kg.
Hi Ray Clayton I've posted the kerbweight as that's the weight we all work our caravans off, ie no more than the cars kerbweight the payload is something different and is adjustable by the driver.
Grampian not sure of the model as it was a hire car & no towbar, I took the details from the hire agreement, I did the same last week with a insignia.
Its quite amazing how some items add weight on a car, The kerbweight on my current car matches that of the old one according to the V5C, but the current one is a higher spec with more toys and some stuff changed with the newer part weighing more than the old one.
Not got them onto a weighbridge side by side, but the newer one feels heavier when driving also. Not as brisk pulling away.
Bessie, you should have hired the new 2ltr diesel, they come with 150bhp or 190, these are what many will buy to tow with.
The kerb weight is now becoming irrelevant, due to modern light materials used in the construction of vehicles, that's why manufacturers specify a maximum weight for towing, and they will have tested them, the 2lr according to Skoda can tow up to a max of 2000 KG , not that anyone would want to, but would tow a van up to 1600 with ease.
perhaps adopting up to the 85% rule of the vehicles max tow might just help in todays world
BTW Bessie, you had the old version , the new 1.6 tdi is actually 120 bhp
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
Bob the car is a new shape 15 plate car, it's a hire car so no choice over engine size i took the details from the hire agreement it could of been 110 bhp but 100% wasn't 120.
As for kerbweights being irelevant thats a matter of opinion, most cars for many years have a max tow weight well above the cars kerbweight.

Oooooooooooh how petty, if you can not come with a proper comment don`t bother. Why do YOU have to be so offensive?
We can all post as we wish and my post wasn't offensive (in any definition I can think of?) - the point is you added nothing to Bessies useful post, only criticised it - surely we all look to help - I've learned huge amounts over the years on here
How many others have actually weighed a car empty and posted results clearly stating what was included ?
Download a hard copy or use the on-line link, check out the technical information, Skoda use the term 'operating weight' see what that includes!! If like my Octavia manual which uses 'unloaded weight ready for work' 1,495kg which is the same on the V5C mass in service!
