Was wondering if good people UKCS can give me any valuable info on this vehicle. One I looked at was 2.0 diesel estate blumotion 170 Sport. Nice car, would be towing van at 1400kg mtplm maybe up to 1500kg in the future. Going round in circles a bit now, managed to narrow it down to Mondeo hatch or estate, Smax or Passat estate.....help!

I thought the Passat was approaching 1600kg depending on model. This would put 1500kg mtplm van at 93.75% if I've calculated correctly. My van at 1400kg works out at 87.5%. This is why I keep going round in circles, have I got something wrong. Smax is really nice but they're quite a bit more money for equivalent car in comparison.

The Passat is a great car but it's to light, smax and mondeo would be the better option.
Bessie
A 2011/2012 model is 17kgs lighter than a Mondeo (comparable models). That equates to about 14kgs difference at 85% - enough to make the Mondeo a `better option`?
Really? Even though the Mondeo has less power, less torque and a lower nose-weight limit?
Hi Grampian, it was 2012 2.0L diesel estate blumotion sport 170bhp. What are the problems with oil pumps?
Juanhunose, I think you're saying the weight differences are negligible, which is what I thought, but keep getting and reading contradictory info. It was the reason I started this thread to try clear it up before I make an expensive mistake!!

When I ordered my mondeo in 2011 I discounted to Passat as its weight was lower than the Mondeo, a lot more than 15ks from memory, my mondeo weigh in at 1705kgs on a weigh bridge.
Had a look on Parkers website and the kerbweights are fairly close (see links). Mondeo Passat
I think most cars weight is greater than stated figure when on the weigh bridge. I don't doubt that the Mondeo is slightly heavier, but for my needs 1400-1500kg MTPLM, i just wanted to make sure the Passat was suitable as well. Gives me more options.

The oil pump problems were on the 140TDI PD engines in VWs, Audis, and Skodas (2006). The 170 & 140 CR engines aren`t affected.
The problems stemmed from defective case hardening on an idler gear, result being a total loss of oil pressure rapidly followed by needing a new engine..... I speak from experience
My Passat estate was fine as a towcar, comfy quiet and stable, it was a 2006 model, the later ones are much improved.
I was towing 1375kgs, but the car was also heavily laden with bikes, inflatable canoes, full Isabella awning & groundsheet, chest fridge for the awning, one metre steel satellite dish & tripod - SWMBO has to have every possibility covered. Economy with van on the hook was 28-30mpg (not hanging around). Wouldn`t have worried about pulling 1500kgs with it.

After the press VW got in 2015 I would not be in a hurry to buy one. I would go for jap Honda CRV or Toyota Rav 4 perhaps
Brother-in-law had a CRV and it never let him down. He did think it was pretty gutless though, and wasn`t impressed with it`s towing ability.
The RAV 4 - well I had one on hire last year for a week and it was pretty grim. Slow, noisy and with downmarket trim. VW have had bad press about dodgy emissions recently (affecting some, not all, cars) , there will be other manufacturer to follow (Renault shares slumped today, thought to be related to such `issues). Personally, I would rather have a car with a VW badge than one of a manufacturer that has had to recall over 34 million vehicles worldwide for safety related issues, some of which have caused fatalities.
Why not buy one? The emissions fiasco has no negative impact on the integrity of the vehicle apart from efficiency obviously. As long as you're aware of this and used resale prices reflect this fairly, I don't see a problem. To be honest I think that VWs have only appeared on my radar recently because of the reduction in prices, making them really good value for money.

34 million recalls im not an expert in the motor industry but I believe that these recalls will be because the particular manufacturer recognizes the problem and is prepared to hold their hands up and rectify it instead of shoving it under the carpet and hoping no one notices in order to save a few quid.
You are right though there will be other makes with the emission problem brought to light I bet it wont be a jap brand though. I don't drive a jap car myself so mine may come up one day too. What I can say from experience is I used to have company cars with my job and have had many different ones over the years the worst being a Passat estate although that was 2009 so things may have improved since.
