Hello.
I'm new to the site and caravan in in general. We were given a small and quite shabby caravan a short while ago but we'd like to upgrade to something bigger, preferably a six berth but I don't know how to work out what weight of caravan I can safely tow with my car licence and 2007 1.8 ford focus estate.
I have looked myself but was quickly confused by the minefield of different and unfamiliar terminology
You need a caravan of all up weight of around 1200kg for safe tow & reasonable performance with 1.8diesel. You can tow a caravan of that weight with your car on just a B licence which you will have if you passed test after start of 1997.
Looks like a max tow of 1200kg, The caravans GROSS laden weight should be below that, beware sellers that give you the unladen weight or tell you your car is fine to tow it.

Which vehicle is yours on this list ? = http://carleasingmadesimple.com/business-car-leasing/ford/focus/gross-vehicle-weight/
If not on that list then look at the V5 registered keepers document and tell us what the figures are for -
Mass in service
Max permissible mass
Max towing weight
ALSO - what are the top two figures (4 listed) on the car weight plate which is usually hidden under the bonnet or in a door frame

Even the lightest Bailey 2 berth in the range weighs in at 1100kg. Every other model weighs more than 1200kg.
the older baileys where lighter, than the new versions
Older Lunar Zenith 5/6 berth would be within the range, Maybe something from the Venus caravan range, Elddis Explore older models, also older Avondale Perle range from the mid 90s when caravans did tend to be lighter, although good examples of the latter may now be hard to find.
