Hi all, my hubby just bought a 4wd at auction and he is now panicking if it is Cat D!!! He's worried he didn't hear them mention it, etc. He's put a deposit but how can I find out if it is Cat D without ringing the auction & looking stupid!!! I put the Reg number in on the DVLA site - it says "Vehicle Type Approval N1" is that the same as "category" ? Thanks in advance for any advice!
Type approval N1 refers to vehicles designed and constructed for the carriage of goods and having a maximum mass not exceeding 3,5 tonnes.
Nothing to do with write offs. A vehicle auction should check all vehicles HPI clear before sale & if write off it would have been on auction sticker in windscreen.
Google category D what I have found is that a category D write off is minimal damage but the cost to repair it is more than the value of the car that's from the RAC website here

kind of contradictory though, minimal damage thats more than the value of the car. hmmm let me think on that one.....
not in my case, i bought a vw caddy van that was cat d, saw the pics before the repair was done, never affected my insurance.
my wifes last car was a cat d picasso, the premium was higher than if it wasnt damaged. the repair was minimal i had the car checked over before buying.
I used to buy do up and sell damaged cars when i was younger, i once bought a stolen recovered astra GTE in the early 90's it had no locks and ignition, wheels, interior ,glass, and had been hit up the rear, at the time that was classed as a cat d car
That is not correct. I work for an insurance company. We don't ask if it's category or not.
miss Baritone you dont have to ask the question, as soon as you put the reg no in the quote the insurance company then lknow the history, thats how they stop cars from being on the road that shouldnt be. It may of changed now but that was the case 3 years ago.
You will never know for sure, even after HPI check.
Try unrecorded damaged cars in google.
Wouldn't worry about it myself as long as you got it at the right price.
A vehicle with any cat against it has a increase to insurance premiums it also affects he resale value and a dealer may not even take it. You can HPI any potential vehicle and if its in a auction it will say on the screen if it has previous.
