Hi just had my Sorento m o t ed on picking it up the the mechanic asked if I used the towbar as he felt there was too much play in it though he admitted he was no expert .He went on to recommend a company that could check it "at a cost "?..We have a westfalia detachable swan neck bar that has a lifetime guarantee .So before parting with cash I thought I woulld ask if it's normal to have an amount of play in this type of tow bar .can I also say that my van was looked over last year by an approved mobile caravan service chap, knowing it was my first time caravaning he gave me a lot of advice and checked my towbar his only comment was that I need to sand it till it shines.any advice please .
It's where the bar fits into the socket can't imagine any detachable would be as sturdy as a solid one it's a side to Side movement.no downward movement at all
I don't know about Westfalia ones but there is no movement at all on my Land Rover one.
I would have thought that if your's had sideways movement that you would have felt or heard it when towing.

I have a Westfalia tow bar and there is no play. Check that the pin and socket are clean and you haven't got some grit in there. If the taper is obstructed at all there wil be play.
