The most sublime towcar we ever had was a 163ps auto Mondeo estate.
However, the mpg towing 1500kgs was only averaging 24 and in normal use never topped 40 mpg (on reading and talking about the bigger engined Fords, the figures are about right)
I would suggest in your case that the 150ps engine would be more than suitable for pulling your van and would give at least 10mpg more.
Currently pulling the same van with a 140ps Tiguan getting 30 towing and 50 in normal use.
The Mondeo was a much better towcar for our length of van, replaced it only for the mpg and wanted a change !
