A friend of mine as just bought a caravan and as convinced himself he needs to take a car and trailer test to be within the laws
He passed his driving test in 2002 and also holds a HGV class 2 licence
I have said he can tow as long as the combination is not more then 3500 kg and also having a HGV class 2 would allow him to tow more then 3500kg although it will not exceed this with is present combination
Thanking anyone in advance who replies

The easiest way is to check the back of his photocard licence. If he has car/caravan over 3.5t combined max allowed MaM his licence will include BE.

It's possible it does not because entitlement formally known as HGV2 is now C & entitlement formally known as HGV1, ie articulated truck is now CE, C1E allows truck/trailer up to 12tonnes. C entitlement does not include trailer or semi trailer(ie artic). C1E & BE is only for pre '97 licence holders without extra test

He can of course drive car/caravan outfit of under 3.5t combined max allowed MaM

To retain C1 & C1E requires HGV medical at 70(£100 at your GP's as not available on NHS)but BE does not. Unless you want to drive a motorhome over 3.5t MaM or you drive a larger commercial vehicle there is no need to pay out for the medical because you can still drive car/caravan over 3.5t combined MaM.

From 45yrs old onward you have to renew any entitlement to drive LGVs, buses of minibuses every 5 years.

Then yearly from 65.

Hi,
I am not sure on this but I believe at 70 if you are driving a Private Heavy goods ,you have to resit your test, as well as the medical. I was told that when I had a PHG myself.
I would be interested to know now as I have just tried to find online and can't find any reference to it.
Regards,
Greg

Very complicated topic -this one.Having recently been taken to court by Vosa ( and having the case thrown out of court) for driving a 7.5 tonner pulling a caravan. The vosa people based their case on the 107 restriction which limits you to a trailer of 750kg. I have a CAT C licence and passed my car test about 1980. So basically they were saying I could drive a 30 ton truck but not a light truck /trailer combination of around 8.5 ton.Not wanting to be outside of the law-I immediately took a test for 7.5 ton plus trailer and passed which also gives me provisional entitlement to drive CAT C--a category in which I passed my test about 30 years ago!!! I now have category C1E --Not to be confused with the other C1E which will have a 107 restriction after it. Are you all keeping up Neither were the magistrates who duly dismissed the case and severely reprimanded the vosa solicitor for wasting everyones time. But..whilst happy with the result..it was dismissed and not an actual guilty/not guilty result.
Theres more I then asked almost every trucker I knew to check their entitlement..even the CAT CE drivers (old class 1 artic) and guess what---they all had a 107 restriction on their C1E (7.5 ton) column meaning they can drive 44 ton artic but not pull a caravan behind a 7.5 ton horsebox for example unless they take a specific test to remove the 107 restriction. Hope thats cleared it up for you all....
no- me neither
