Had a few Landrovers and towed with them with no problems. We have just bought a 1999 Discovery and the tow bar is under the bumper and not sticking out like our previous 4 x 4`s. The Discover is higher than our previous ones(bigger springs I think) so we thought this might be the reason.
Do you think we will have a problem towing our caravan it has an alko hitch lock on the caravan.
If it's a fixed flange towball (with the 2 x 16mm. mounting bolts) then you can buy a spacer plate for extending the towball from the towbar. The one in the link is 1" thick but they do different sizes.

I would be worried that the towbar is fitted incorrectly, or the wrong towbar is fitted.
Perhaps the previous owner just hauled small trailers so didn't care.
I think you are right we had a go at fitting the hitch on the car last night it` def not right. We have ordered a swan neck now and will have that fitted. Just glad we checked before we tried to go off with the caravan.
