I am asking a question regarding an issue I am sure everyone struggles with when starting to consider a caravan....towing weight ratios!!
We are just looking to go from trailer tent to caravan and thought as our car had a nice big engine this would be fine and dandy. In actual fact its max towing weight is 1250kg and so looking at caravans it seems to limit us quite a bit and I am finding the unladen weight and MTPLM confusing. For example I like a Lunar Quasar 2014 534 it has an unladen weight of 1146kg and MTPLM of 1305kg, so at first thought it looks ok but does it mean I cant put anything in it?
I really would appreciate seasoned advice on this...thank you :-)
Yes thats right. it would be legal to tow empty but if axle weight of loaded caravan hitched to car & weighed on an axle weigher exceeded 1250kg then you would not be legal. So there would be insufficient capacity for a normal compliment of gear in caravan.
Theres nothing confusing about unladen weight Miro & max laden weight Mtplm. The difference between those 2 figures is the amount you can load into caravan & usually it's not a huge amount so you need to choose a caravan that has a max laden weight Mtplm below your car max tow weight.
You car kerbweight is 1480kg so you can choose a caravan with Mtplm up to car max tow weight of 1250kg.
