Does anyone have a RAV 4 hybrid? What kind of solo mpg have you been getting? How's the torque / performance? Is it nice to drive? (I've had a Prius for many years so am familiar with the hybrid driving experience, but write ups in the press have not been very complimentary about the RAV).
Is it happy to run on battery with a gentle foot, or in EV mode, or is the engine always kicking in? Does ECO mode make any difference?
I have one and am getting around 50mpg solo, towing is 23mpg pulling a 1300kg caravan. Bit noisy at times with the CVT but otherwise pulls no problem.
I had a prius and as you know takes a little while to work out how best to get the best out of the Hybrid system. But it is very happy to drive in EV with a light pedal (including towing).
Max tow weight for the Rav 4 hybrid is 1650kg - that's more than the diesel.
This figure is for the AWD version.
For 2WD it's 800kg.
For anything unbraked it's 750kg for 2WD and AWD
Warrenb - I went to the Toyota dealer the other day and they showed me the trip computer on their staff RAV 4's (they were 2WD business edition ones). With 3000-5000 miles on the clock they were getting 35-38 mpg. The dealer assured me that was "about right" for real life mpg from their experience.
Not very impressive bearing in mind I can get this range from my AWD petrol CRV (the trip for my current tank is over 40mpg).
I was hoping he was going to say 50 mpg like you are getting was the norm :(
The big BUT here is that driving a hybrid the correct way makes a big difference to mpg compared to normal cars, so I can well believe that driven as intended 50 is possible.....I used to get mid 50's from our gen 2 Prius but once I worked out how to get the best from it that was into the low 60's.
Completely agreed, I used to get 50mpg from the mk 2 prius, but got the hang of it and got nearer 60. Problem is, most people just don't get how to drive it, if you just keep your foot on the pedal the EV won't kick in because it thinks you are still wanting to accelerate, Just raising the foot slightly and then back down normally makes the EV kick in and the mpg to rise.
Very happy with it, tows fine, and is very quiet and smooth.
Yes, small adjustments with the throttle pedal are the key to switching the system between charge, EV, or coast (when no arrows are moving on the display). Even when running on petrol, little off and on adjustments with the pedal will make the CVT pick a much lower "gear" a bit like a paddle shift but using your foot!
If the RAV operates like this too it's very tempting - driving a normal car is a bit boring really after getting the best out of a hybrid :)
We get 39 towing with our 2ltr 140CR tdi Yeti, Swift Charisma 535 had it up to 41 for a while, towing from Oakhampton to Wrexham. SWMBO, has had 64 solo.
I normally get 28 mpg towing 1500kgs, however in warmer weather I have got up to 32mpg and solo up to 62mpg with my 2.2 diesel Honda CRV. At present I don't see any practical reason for caravanners to consider hybrids, and I will be interested to see if the performance figures for the new hybrid CRV can change my mind.

I must have a heavy foot - about 50 mpg normal, 30mpg towing with our Yeti 140 4x4. Still love it though. Maybe a hybrid next time.
