Good evening

Please could someone explain to me (in simple terms) what weight caravan I am legally allowed to tow? I passed my test in September 1997 and I drive a new shape Nissan Xtrail (1.6 diesel with 7 seats).

I have absolutely no idea about towing weights, etc so please feel free to explain as simply as possible!

3500kg minus the cars max gross laden weight, which will be on the cars chassis plate.

Unless the cars max tow is less than that.


I dont have the exact figures, but i think your looking at caravans with a GROSS laden weight of 1200kg.

Not the MIRO or unladen weight. The caravans max weight.

if you post the figures on the chassis plate then you can tell accurately.

Thanks for the information. Grampian91, I have had a look and it says the maximum permissible mass is 2260 and mass in service is 1727. Am I right in saying I can tow up to 1240kg?

Yep, but remember thats the caravans gross laden weight figure. Not the weight that you put into the van.

So you cannot buy a 1300kg caravan and think about loading it lightly. The gross figure counts. It must be under 1240kg.


Watch out for sellers that give you the MIRO or unladen weights.

Grampian has a point: the 3.5 tonne limit for both vehicles assumes both the car and the caravan are fully laden. The rozzers would be unimpressed to be told you only had a toothbrush and half a tank of fuel.

The info you need is all on t'internet. I strongly recommend you do your research. Us oldies don't have your problem; perhaps the additional test would be worthwhile.
