The 1.8 diesel engine fitted to the older C Max had a few problems, I would tend to go for the newer 2 litre diesel.

We towed a 1400kg MTPLM van with 2.0tdci and it was a great car, trundled along no problems even up hills. Wasn't great reversing van though.
