We need to fit a tow bar to our Hyundai iX35 to accommodate a newly
acquired Dandy trailer tent.
Along with the tent, we also have a fixed plate 'stabiliser bar' for a
flange tow bar, from the previous owner.
As our Hyundai has rear parking sensors, depending on who we speak
with, we have heard conflicting stories about what type of tow bar we
need fitted.
Ideally we would like to use the provided stabiliser bar with a flange
tow bar, as this would be most cost effective. One fitter has said this
'should' be ok, however others have suggested we would need to get a
'fixed' swan neck tow bar, to avoid the parking sensors, or even a
'removable' swan neck. But doing this would require an Alko Hitch
stabiliser retro-fitted to the Dandy.....unless anyone can suggest
alternatives?
Dandy stockists do not do this, and to date we have been unable to find
a caravan workshop, that will work on a trailer tent chassis, let alone
get an idea of cost.
Therefore, if there are any Hyundai iX35, or similar, owners out there
that have a tow bar fitted, that can share their experience and advise,
it would be much appreciated?
I doubt if you would need a stabiliser for towing a Dandy, if you load it correctly with the correct nose weight it should be very stable.
However if you want to use that stabiliser I would work out where the tow ball and stabiliser plate would be in relation to the bumper and then "mock up" something in that position and see if it triggers the reversing sensors. Depending on where the sensors are fitted in your rear bumper you may find that the sensors are so much higher than the tow ball that they are not affected by it.
If you do decide to go with an Alko stabiliser hitch then any mobile caravan tech should be able to fit one very easily.

You can buy an adapter bracket that clamps onto either the fixed or detachable swan neck towbar. That way you can use your blade type stabiliser.
I tried one of these on my previous car and although it was torqued up to the correct settings I was unable to stop the bracket turning on the swan neck and the blade parting company with the A frame bracket.
You won't need a stabiliser on a Dandy. A correctly loaded Dandy wouldn't even move at normal road speeds. And it's a folding camper not a trailer tent
