Our son has a 55 plate transporter as family transport, it hasn't got what I would call 'normal wheels', they are low sporty design. I think its a 1.9cc.
We have just upgraded to a small caravan and still have the 2006 Pathfinder 600 which is 900kgs.
He was using our 2000 Pennine Sterling which is lighter to tow, but doesn't have the extra luxuries.

Son passed his test after the 90's, therefore doesn't have 'grandparents' towing rights'!
Without knowing all the relevant weights it is difficult to guess if the new one can be towed on a B licence or not. What is the max weight of his VW? If the max weight of the VW added to the max weight of the trailer is less than 3500kg he can tow it on a B licence.
The max laden weight should be on V5 doc & on plate under bonnet. That max laden weight often referred to as gvw or mam & the max laden weight of camper added together must not exceed 3500kg for driving on just a B licence. Unless your lighter folding camper is under 750kg max laden then he can tow it with just a B licence.
As Opensauce says check the V5 and the plate on the vehicle. If you get stopped by the Police or VOSA (or whatever they are called this year) they will use the weights on the vehicle plate. The first weight on the plate will be the max vehicle weight and the second weight will be gross train weight so if the max vehicle weight plus the MTPLM of the camper add up to less than 3500kg then it will be ok on a B licence.
