Hello we have been looking at the crv 1.6 as our next tow car. I am not worried about the fact that the crv is now 1.6, but we saw a lovely 4x4 auto ex today. I was wondering what the fuel consumption would be when towing.
It depends what you are towing. When we have towed trailers, trailer tents and folding campers with various vehicles we have got the same or better mpg than when driving solo, probably as a result of driving slower and more carefully. When towing a caravan we always get 25-30 mpg, it doesn't seem to matter which car or caravan we have the mpg is always about the same.
I have a Skoda Octavia Estate 4x4 2.0TDi get around 33-37mpg towing depending on road, over 60mpg solo. For normal driving most of the power goes to the front wheels, when they start to slip (on mud, wet hill starts, snow) then power is transferred to the rear wheels as and when needed. Mine has Haldex traction.

If the going gets really tough and the front wheels start losing traction very easily it won't send power to the rear wheels in order to protect the 4x4 system.
If the 1.6 2wheel drive is a petrol model, then your MPG will be quite low when towing, likewise the Automatic ls less fuel efficient than the manual model, and quite slugish as well.
I got given a CRV auto 1.6 as a curtosy car when mine went in for a service, the pick up and power of it was like driving a snail, even my automatic Jazz could do better with its 1.4 engine, and even that is like driving a Grannys car when it comes to power and speed.
Ok, l may be biased, but if you could find a 2.2 Dtec Crv manual with low mileage and a full service history, l think you would be very pleased with the results when it comes to towing your caravan, power just when you need it and not to bad on the MPG either.

personally from experience with other makes of cars I wouldn't touch an automatic under 2 ltr for towing anything over 1200kgs, we learnt the hard way with an 1.8 auto many years back only pulling a folding camper, and even tho we looked after that gearbox like it was the crown jewels it would still over heat
