Has anyone towed this route? I'm wondering if the 483 up to Llangollen, then along the A5 to Capel Curig, then the 4086 is best. We have a heavy towcar which would cope with hills, but what is the Llanberis Pass like? I don't fancy towing through Porthmadog if we go the A470/A487 route. Any advice much appreciated, thanks.
you don't actually go thr Porthmadog, you turn off before then. the Porthmadog route is the one we would use but follow the a487 along the new road past Porthmadog around to Caernarfon taking the a4086 to llanberris
We have a motorhome. quite a large one at the time, and we came across the Llanberis Pass. It was OK but narrow in parts so best to take it easy and be prepared to slow/stop to let oncoming traffic through. Pretty spectacular as well.
My husband was a bit of a climber when he was younger and knows Snowdonia really well. We go quite a bit in our caravan to various places in Snowdonia but we would never consider the Llanberis pass with a caravan. It is hairaising enough with just the car!
If we were going from Welshpool to Llanberis we would go via Dolgellau, Porthmadog and then right up to Caernarfon before going off to Llanberis. It might be the long route in miles but is by far the best route with a caravan.
Llanberis is ok as long as your towcar is powerful enough to handle the inclines. If coaches and busses can handle it then it should not pose A problem to an experienced caravanner with a well matched outfit powerwise.

It's not the gradients on the Llanberris pass that would be the biggest worry, it's the fact that most of the roads are fairly narrow, twisty and flanked on both sides by low stone walls along which it would be very easy to scrape a caravan particularly if a bus or similar large vehicle coming the other way didn't give you space!
The A487 bypasses Porthmadog now, no need to drive through the town at all.

I came through the Llanberis pass yesterday, from Conwy to Bangor via the scenic route, spectacular falls, fast flowing mountain steams, and snow capped peaks. It was fairly quiet for this time of year, apart from quite a few mountain Goats down on the lower levels for breeding season, some with very young kids in tow.
Well worth a visit if you are ever in the area, and plenty of car park spaces available at this time of year.
The sea was quite choppy today as we drove home via the A55 towards Chester to pick up the M6 for home. We were hitch free this time, stayed in a hotel, but we missed the comforts of our caravan big time.
Just needed a break and a bit of time to unwind from dealing with elderly demented relatives at the moment, and took the chance whilst we could.

Thanks for all the advice everyone! We did go Dolgellau - Porthmadog - Caernarvon route in the end. Beautiful scenic drive. Bit wet coming back and diversion for floods, but really worth getting away for a few days. It's great to get away and just soak up the views of our beautiful countryside don't you think? Even if the weather isn't up to much, the dogs don't care and had a few good runs on the lovely beaches up there. If we wait for good weather we might never go anywhere :)
