Just in the process of buying one of these , will be towing a swift challenger 480se .. not even done a tow check but had mondeo’s before and loved them .

Selling the Kia Sportage as it’s far to heavy on fuel in normal day to day use .pretty sure I’m doing the right thing

youll not go wrong with a Mondeo 2.0tdci. great tow cars and easy on the pocket when not towing. But like all modern day cars things do go wrong which can be expensive. but the good thing about a Mondeo is your local mechanic will know his way around them.

Good choice, good economy and a good tow car, to keep it that way make sure the timing belt is changed at 80.000, only use the proper low ash oil and try to stick to the recommended diesel, I use BP ultimate by choice, it cost a bit more at fill up but saves money long term (this is my experience).

Or you could consider an 2.0 TDCI S-Max. Basically a taller, heavier 7 seat MPV Mondeo. We don't use the rear 2 seats, they're folded flat and create a huge boot for the dog crate. Excellent tow car.

It's a good sound car but without knowing the weight of your caravan it's impossible to advise whether you're "doing the right thing" as you put it.

Will you be buying the car new or second-hand? If the latter, what sort of age/mileage?

caravan is a swift challenger 480se 2 berth MIRO around 1300kg without looking it up .
car is Mondeo Zetec 2.0tdci 2011 74,000 on clock one owner FSH ,I think the timing belt has been done .

previously had 2 mkiii mondeos and towed with them both with no problems.

Same as mine. Timing belt doesn't need doing till 120k miles. Mines has now done 140k miles. I've changed the battery and had to do rear trailing arm suspension bushes. I have also had a few drop links which are as cheap as chips. I run it on tesco diesel. Gets used every day and has never missed a beat.
No complaints. Would I but another yup in a minute, but no sign of this one giving up yet, touch wood.

If you like it buy it, it will do the job your buying it for with the greatest of ease.
You pay your money you take the chance.

Same engine in Smax as mondeo.

Ford say 120k, however Peugeot have updated the advice for the same engine in their cars and advised dealers that it should be done at 80k,
So it depends on how lucky the owners consider themselves as to when they change it.

I wouldn't risk it so my car was done at 80k along with the associated parts😯

It's the quality of the belt that dictates the change intervals not the actual engine. There's also a time interval as well as mileage. Think it's 10 years for my car but would need to check.
Maybe the belts that were fitted on the Peugeot are not as robust as the ones on Ford.

The good bit about PSA engines is that if the timing belt does snap, these engines are fitted with rockers that are designed to snap if the piston hits any of the valves, the valves will not be bent or damaged, its then a fairly easy job to replace the broken rockers without having to remove the head, I really like the design of the PSA 2 litre its designed in such a way that a timing belt snapping is most unlikley to happen ,they have a timing chain between the two camshafts and a high pressure fuel pump that is timed in such a way that it pulses do not correspond with valve opening thus giving the timing belt an easy life. Because of their reliability and long life these engines are fitted to lots of different vehicles, for good reason.

Wow picked the car up at mid day and spent the afternoon setting the computer to how I liked and matching the mobile phone .. just been out in the dark to check the interior lights .... wow. It’s like a mobile disco .. impressed am I

Towed with several Mondeo's and they all towed well.

Diesels towed far better than the petrols.

In the older (2004) 2L TDCI I managed 39mpg towing my caravan to the Cumbrian coast. FIL thought we would die if we exceeded 50mph i think. Kept at 56mph most of the way.

Made a change from the Petrol versions getting 26mpg when towing.

33mpg was more likely when sticking to the limit and those Cornish hills on the A30.

I find that being able to open all the windows as you walk to the car is a gods send in this weather.

Just bought a Mondeo 2.0 and like others have said, it tows like a dream and its reasonable on the pocket when not towing.

I currently get about 57MPG when not towing (I do 100 miles an day and stick to 65pmh)
