Hi everyone,
I am coming with the following question: is 2002 Land Rover Freelander Kalahari 1.8 petrol a fair towing car?
The data I found online shows that it can tow up to 1800-2000kg.
Can anyone help, please?
Thank you.
Looking at Parkers specifications it looks like it would make a good tow car, but I have no experience of such a vehicle. Quite thirsty though at 27mpg solo. Could be quite a bit less than that towing a caravan. Are you specifically avoiding diesels? Much better fuel consumption and good torque for towing.
The engine would work hard towin. The kmseries engines are prone to head gasket issues, unless the later type has been fitted.
My mate had a diesel one which was a good reliable towcar.

A 1.8 Freelander is not a particularly good car at all, let alone for towing. Although peak power seems ok, it doesn't produce much power at lower engine speeds. It doesn't produce enough torque for comfortable towing and the torque it does produce is again produced at too high engine speeds to be useful. The TD4 is a much better engine. It lacks 8bhp of peak power compared to the 1.8 but it produces more power at lower engine speeds and it produces about 60% more torque than the 1.8 again at a lower engine speed. The 1.8 is a fairly fragile engine and it was developed for use in lightweight saloon and hatchback cars, it is too underpowered and too thirsty to make a good engine for towing. The Td4 powered Freelander is an excellent towcar.
Unless you have a specific reason for wanting a petrol powered vehicle I'd pass it by and go for the TD4 model.
We tow a 1500kg van with a 2005 auto with no problem at all.
What is this engine fitted in? Golf and Passat for example have many different models with different power outputs and different kerb weights that will affect what you can tow. Have a look at Parker's car specs to get an idea of weights etc.
I found another one...and have no idea if it is a good tow car or not. On Parker website it says it can tow up to 1500kg. It's a 2008 KIA
CARENS 2.0 GS CRDI 5d 138 BHP 2 L.
Any thoughts...again? Please?
Thank you.
Best wishes to All.

Hi,
It's on a 2007 Passat.

The Kia was one of the options I looked at when I sold my Volvo V70, but in the end I chose a 2008 Nissan X Trail. Great tow car.
The VW Passat is a great car, but find a 2.0 TDI (140bhp from 2006-2014). There are lots about. A full service history is essential but provided it has that, high mileage shouldn't be an issue.
The 1.9 TDI from that period (105bhp) is underpowered.
Agree with the comments above about the Freelander petrol. That engine was initially developed for Rover saloons and the MGF sports car, and slotted into the Freelander as an afterthought. It wasn't really designed to take the weight of that car, never mind a trailer as well. In general terms, diesel is much better suited to towing heavy weights unless you need to avoid it for other reasons.
I have replied separately to your thread about the Kia, which I saw before this one.

My family have had passats, skodas, and a golf with the 1.9TDI engine over the years. never had any problems with any of them apart from the EGR valve on the passat at 200K miles.
The passat was the 130BHP with the 6 speed box. My mum used it as her towcar for years, never let her down.
