I’ve looked in the manual but I can’t find my answer? I have a Honda Civic 1.8 petrol 2008 we are new caravaners and interested in buying a 2 berth caravan and we don’t know the maximum towing weight for our car? Please any answers would be appreciated. Any negativity not welcome 😊
Hi J.
According to the web the max towing capacity of a manual Civic is 1200kg. The automatic gearbox version is 800kg. However accepted wisdom when arriving at a towing weight is to take the weight of the car which is circa 1160 kg and do not exceed 80% of this weight for whatever you tow, so fully loaded van circa 928kg max weight for the manual version. If auto it stays at 800kg.
Assuming your car is a manual, Parker's suggest the kerbweight is 1251kg, as you are new to towing it is recommended to tow at 85% of the kerbweight to be on the safe side, which means you would be looking for a caravan with a MTPLM of around 1100kg. The automatic will usually have a lower tow weight.
You should check these figures for yourself, look on the log book or on the car itself.
what does the vin plate on your car actually state? this is what the police would be using if you got stopped in a check point. there should be one in your engine bay on the slam panel (where the bonnet catch is).
The guideline is that the MTPLM of the caravan should not exceed 85% of the car's kerbweight not 85% of the max tow limit. The max tow of the vehicle has nothing to do with towing a big white box at motorway speeds safely.
We don't know the exact details of this Honda but looks like it is around 1250kg so safest thing is to aim for 85% of that.
