Towbar is not classed as a modification. Phone them & they will sort it out.

With all the insurers I have had a tow bar has always been classed as a modification, but I have never been charged extra for it.

When you check your insurance schedule it should indicate that you have a tow bar fitted.

Likewise. I always declare it when I do a search for insurance but I have never been charged extra for it. Some insurers class it as a modification but others don't.

Likewise here and if you don't declare it they won't pay out in a claim. Insurance can be quite complicated some tow your car away and leave the caravan others tow away both. My insurance covers both a thing a lot of people don't even think about.

Try NFU Mutual - as they deal with farmers they are used to tow bars! They are still a mutual too.

So are we saying that if the tow bar is part of the vehicle spec you still need to declare it?

-------------
XVI yes?

As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.

Changed car recently. I told Saga it had a towbar fitted they said they don’t need to know. Some companies may want to know about it but don’t charge extra for it. As suggested to op. Sort it out with a phone call.

Unlikely they won't pay out if they would have covered the modification had it been declared.

What they may do is ask for the additional premim they would have charged to cover it before paying out as happened to a colleague who changed wheels on his car and didn't declare.

I wouldn't be too sure about that. Insurance companies are often on the lookout for excuses not to pay out, and not declaring a "modification" is one of them. They rarely charge extra for towbars anyway, or at least I have never been charged extra and I have had quite a number of different vehicles with them fitted.

I had a very small discount from my company after informing them of fitting a towbar.

Definitely had to declare a tow bar as a modification - hasn't affected premiums though. Only insurer I've used that it wasn't classed as a modification was, as above, NFU -towing vehicles covered as standard.
Some vehicles are not able to tow at all, maybe the car in question does have published/tested towing figures. ( if I could remember the tech' word, I'd use it...)

Never been refused insurance for a fitted tow bar, or been charged extra, but they definitely want to know in most cases and list it on policy as a 'modification'.

Certainly wouldn't neglect to tell them or assume can be notified after a claim, insurers always looking for a way out of paying up!

I am with NFU and apparently a towbar on my Defender is classed as standard equipment with them. I didn't even have to declare the roof rack as that is a genuine Land Rover part and also classed as standard equipment. I did have to declare the winch and bumper, uprated suspension, air brake system, tacho, auxiliary lights and engine change from 2.5 diesel to 4.6 petrol though.

I don’t believe so, my insurance company’s policy is that any “modification” that was applied during vehicle build is not reportable

TBH if they cannot get that right on their website is it really worth phoning them?
