Hi All, Hope you are all well, Our Family of 6 will be travelling to the Dordogne in France. This time we have purchased a trailer. This is my first time taking the trailer to France. It is single axle and has 8" wheels. I have just replaced all the bearings and re-greased and replaced the wheels with 2 spares. I have got the correct trailer level height by using a drop plate on our touran. Has anyone here got any experience of towing a small trailer with 8" wheels to France? Appreciate your help.
I've never taken a trailer that small, however, provided that it's included on the booking for either Eurotunnel or whatever ferry company you're using I can't see that you'd have any issues at all.
The only thing I would recommend is that you take a spare wheel - I realise you've replaced both wheels recently but if you do get a puncture tyres that small are unlikely to be readily available.
According to the RAC (April 2022) there are no reduced speed limits for cars towing small trailers.
We last visited the Dordogne in summer 2019, taking a bigger caravan. We were told in no uncertain terms that we had to display speed stickers on the back of the caravan, which we did. We didn't see a single other caravan that had done the same, and now can't get the stickers off again ...

When I lived in the Dordogne I used to travel back to Derbyshire in the UK (750 miles each way) occasionally and used my trailer with 8" wheels and never had any problems. 6'x4' box trailer would be well loaded up at times carrying everything from bathroom suits to car parts etc. Always carried a spare tyre a couple of inner tubes and a pump just in case. As long as your trailer is in good condition I wouldn't worry too much and enjoy your holiday.
I suspect that you may be limited to 90kph when towing in France. I seem to remember that this limit is based on the weight of your vehicle and the maximum weight of any trailer it may tow, rather than the actual weight of the trailer that it is towing. I await correction if necessary.
Speed limits are 90 or 80kph on normal roads anyway, except in built up areas of course.
As well as a spare wheel make sure you have the correct wheel nut spanner and a suitable jack for the trailer as the car one may not do.
A small bottle jack would do.
