Hi, wondering which is the best route with a caravan from Gloucester to Barmouth - I don't like heights with a big drop off the side of the road so I'd like to not arrive a nervous wreck
There seems to be the options of
Hereford - Llandrindod Wells -Barmouth
Ledbury - Ludlow - Weshpool - Barmouth
M5 - M54 - Welspool - Barmouth
or any other suggestions please
Provided you don't hit the M5/M6 junction at rush hour that route is normally fine and is the one I'd go for. The A49 is fine from Ludlow north but I don't really know it further south.
From Shrewsbury, I wouldn't go via Welshpool. I'd stay on the A5 through Llangollen, then go A494 through Bala.

We will be going that way soon, so wondered what is wrong with Dinas Mawddwy? I hadn't considered going via Bala, isn't that a long way around? We are going to Merthyr Farm just inland from Harlech.

as far as getting to harlech is concerned then i would say the best route is A496 to barmouth, however from experience the road from barmouth to harlech is not a good road even for when not towing never mind the last bit to merthyr farm which i wouldnt even consider taking the caravan on, and thats saying a lot from me to refuse to tow on that b road, which is nothing sort of a very long farm track, are you really sure you want to be on that site?
Dinas Mawwdwy. Its the incline and bend a the top on the way to Barmouth
How steep is dinas mawddwy?
The Long Route then heads over the Dinas Mawddwy Pass (367m) and then a long descent down to the turn off to Bwlch y Groes (Hellfire Pass). This climb is not that long but pretty steep, averaging 13.7% and with a hairpin at 25% and goes up to 554m in 2.5km - the highest tarmac road in Wales.
Copy and pasted. Not sure but maybe Google roads may provide some insight.
suns 25%??? im looking at that bend on the google map and it says 14%, yeah ok its a long long climb up that part of the road, but its a decent road, that with some "clever" driving i.e. hanging back a bit from the traffic before you start the climb and then take a run at it, its fine! i have driven up there many times in a hgv1 weighing 44 ton and i know which way i would rather travel
It may come down to individual vehicle. Our first Ford Escort was packed wrong and motor boated up the Dinas. We now have a van. Your ok if you get a clear run up from the roundabout but if someone in front is struggling or its busy there is a fair bit of gear changing. Plus the view from the passenger side on the way up, this is something i thought the OP should know. We jump on M5 junction 2 Northbound, M6 to Telford , Shewsbury, Welshpool, Dinas Mawddwy.
Sorry Marg6, missed your reply. Plenty of caravans go there, so fingers crossed! I tried everywhere else first, they were all fully booked. I haven't told OH about the road...
