If only for UK use, definitely not (not yet anyway!).
If going abroad to some parts of Europe it seems wise even if doubtful that it's technically required (requirement is for trailers OVER 750kg AFAIK), have heard reports of officials challenging owners, how true is always in doubt, as could just be tittle tattle! But for relatively small cost, it may be better to remove the risk IMHO.
As Monty says, I would register it and get the plate for it, just to be on the safe side. It will probably cost about £45 for registration and the plate, but it lasts for as long as you own the trailer.
A Google AI overview is stating "Over 750kgs", as do the official .gov sites.
It also states:
Note: If your trailer is plated exactly at 750kg or less (i.e., its maximum laden weight is not over 750kg), registration may not be mandatory, but it is strongly advised to carry documentation proving its weight to avoid delays, as many French authorities consider 750kg+ to be a distinct category.
You cannot register the trailer. On the second page of the online form it asks do you have a trailer account ? So that will be a no ? On the third page it asks do you have any trailers that weigh over 750kg in gross weight ? That will be a no as well.
The next page states. You cannot create a trailer account
To create a trailer account, trailers must weigh over 750kg in gross weight.
How can he be right if you cannot actually register the trailer ? The online form will not allow you to do so because it does not need registration to take abroad.

Swifty - yes thanks. That’s as I understood as well - but as my last message talking with DVLA (an actual person) - it IS a requirement.
I suspect the actual person does not know everything of which they are asked.
------------- XVI yes?
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
