Nice to see that highways England have decided to close the A34 southbound from Sutton Scotney all the way to the M3 at weekends throughout August, there goes my planning for getting from Stafford to Brittany Ferries, Portsmouth next weekend ??

Usually go M6, M6 toll, M42, M40, A34, M3, M27 with stops at Warwick and Sutton Scotney services, looks like M40 all the way down to the M25 now

We used that route about a month ago and although the road was open it was chaos. The roadworks are extensive and it added over an hour to our journey. Even if it wasn’t closed I would recommend avoiding it.

It’s apparently closed between 8pm to 6am Monday to Friday and all weekend throughout August, I noticed the slip road from the M3 to the A34 northbound is also closed

Heading from the North take A303, then head for Salisbury, then southampton, may add quite a bit of time to journey so please add that on to journey time

Further to this, I did a bit more research and it’s only certain weekends that there is a full closure (21-24 Aug is the next planned weekend closure), we came through on 10 August and it was open fortunately as I didn’t fancy long detours, we also sailed through the roadworks where the M3 and A34 meet with no issues (it was about 8pm on a Saturday though).

We get back to Portsmouth on 25 Aug so shouldn’t be any issues with closures then.
