Statistics eh? The list showing that some 4x4s do more to the gallon focussed on the CO2 emissions. No mention of the carcinogenic particles that diesel combustion emits against petrol. Notice that the top of the list is diesel engines and the bottom half petrol.
Anyway, thanks for the 'energetic' discussion. We all have our own opinions, and I think most of us respect each other's. On that note, I think I'll give this thread a miss.
Oh, and Trixama, apologies if I have riled you in any of this. Don't bother responding with any of your 'facts', as I won't be replying to you any more on this thread.
if fuel consumption is an issue then should they ban caravans?
our old 406 hdi would happily do 50 mpg on the motorway, but when towing it would drop to an average of 25 mpg ( on hills etc). so towing a caravan is bad for the environment because you use more fuel.
I now drive a td4 freelander, this is no worse on fuel than my previous omega 2.2 diesel.
As for the 4x4 argument, I would rather have a heavy car and know that if i get caught in a cross wind etc my van /car will be ok.
how many idiots do you see driving cars where the back end is nearly on the floor and that we all know are too light for the caravan.

I drive a 4x4 and yesterday drove to a meeting in the Midlands from my home near Oldham - a round trip of about 300 miles. This involved driving several motorways - M60, M56, M6, M42 and M40.
On the way back, I saw several caravans being towed by saloon cars and 4x4s at speeds between 60mph and 75mph. All of these were fitted with stabilisers!!
It continues to concern me greatly that many caravanners use stabilisers, presumably because they believe that they do something useful - yet flagrantly risk their own lives and those of other road users by driving at speeds well in excess of the speed limit, greatly increasing the risk of instability and snaking.

if you have a big caravan then get a bigger car ?
happy caravaning
agreed , like the moron on the M6 near Preston this afternoon towing at 70 + with a Saab convertible in the 3rd lane with an almighty snake on & with the back of the car touching the floor.
